Silviculture - Background

SaplingsThe Canadian Forest Service published its first national report of silviculture statistics in 1982 (1), which covered silvicultural activities practised in Canada by governments and industry from fiscal years 1975-76 to 1979-80. Subsequent reports were published in 1986 (2), 1989 (3), and 1990 (4). Since 1990, data have been collected and compiled in the National Forestry Database.

  • HARVESTING: Method of harvest including clearcut, selection and commercial thinning.
  • SIZE OF HARVEST AREA: Policy/guidelines, practices by loggers; calculated average size of cut and notes (including restrictions, shapes of cuts, salvage areas)
  • SITE PREPARATION: Methods used to enhance the success of regeneration
  • SCARIFICATION: Chemical treatment applied to seed to enhance germination
  • ARTIFICIAL REGENERATION: Size of seeding areas; types of species planted
  • STAND TENDING: An intermediate treatment made to improve the composition, structure, condition, health and growth of even- or uneven-aged stands
